Grammy-nominated R&B/Soul vocalist Syleena Johnson has just dropped her all-covers album Rebirth of Soul which pays homage to the soul music of the 1960’s and 1970’s.
Syleena’s father Syl Johnson who is obviously a key influence on the album sonically makes one think that it’s an undiscovered vintage record from past times with soul-stirring renditions of “There’ll Come a Time”, “The Makings of You”, “I’d Rather Go Blind”, “These Arms of Mine” and first single “We Did It”.
One of the poignant songs is “Is It Because I’m Black” with lyric such as “Something is holding me back. Is it because I’m black?” which is very relevant today.
Overall, the album is a great listening experience for any generation. Timeless.
