Rising quadruple threat singer, songwriter, actress and model LYR!C has a talent that goes unmatched. The Chicago native is the edgy urban answer to music! Lyr!c is finishing up her debut EP #NoFilter but in the meantime her single "You" is available on all online digital music platforms.
Terrance: Introduce yourself. What do you want people to know about Lyr!c?
Lyr!c: Well, I’m Lyr!c and I’m 16 years old. I’m a singer, actress and model, but my biggest passion is singing. I’ve always loved to sing since I was a very little girl.
Terrance: Growing up in Chicago how does it influence and impact your music?
Lyr!c: There’s a lot of people that have grown up in Chicago and their music has enlightened and made Chicago better. I can say that Chance the Rapper is a great example of that as well as Kanye. Even actors. I feel every artist has their own city that they represent and I feel like I can do that too.
Terrance: What does Black History Month mean to you?
Lyr!c: It’s funny you say that because I’m actually performing at one of my Black History Month festivals at my school, but Black History Month means a lot to me and I’m going to see Black Panther in a few days when it comes out. I was raised to understand African-American culture and believe and trust my opinion and not be afraid to stand up for what’s right and I feel black people did that and I completely represent it.
Terrance: Talk about your debut single, “You” and the message behind it.
Lyr!c: Okay I love “You”. It was written all by me and it will be released on Friday and I purposely did that because I want it to be affiliated with Valentine’s Day. It’s basically about your feelings and it’s like a roller coaster. You’re scared, you’re nervous, you love it, you like it, you want it and all of these different things. I feel like at some point every male or female goes through that stage like I really like you and I really want to be with you, but I’m scared of getting hurt or put in a bad situation. I feel like that is what I wanted to portray in the song. It could be a fun song, it could be a love song, but it’s still like, oh yeah you better not hurt me or I’m gonna tell you, you better not do me like that (laughs).
Terrance: Detail us about your upcoming EP #NoFilter. How did it get it’s name?
Lyr!c: I’ve always been outspoken and I sometimes can come off as if I don’t have a filter because I speak my mind and I don’t care who’s around. Like I’m going to tell you what it is and I felt #NoFilter was the perfect name for my first EP. This is me. Okay I’m careless, not in a bad way but I’m going to stand up and I want to inspire other young girls to not care what others think about them.
Terrance: If you could make one dream collaboration happen who would it be with?
Lyr!c: I really want to collaborate with Beyonce. I want to see where her head’s at and see where mine is at and how she could push me to become more of a better artist just by listening to her.
Terrance: In terms of your career where do you see yourself in 5 years?
Lyr!c: In 5 years I see myself already getting Grammy nominations and repeated Grammy's of course. I see myself being on top of the world and showing how it should be and not just to teenagers and kids but adults too. Like no, this is how it should be done and that’s how I see myself. Of course performing and touring across the world and visiting everywhere.
Terrance: Advice you would give to other young aspiring artists trying to find their voice in the music industry?
Lyr!c: If you are my age 16, younger or older, just keep striving no matter how hard it gets. No matter how many people tell you that you can’t do it or you’re not good enough or your voice isn’t powerful enough. Keep doing it because you never know what will happen. Just keep your head up. That’s what my mom always tell me, just keep your head up, you know? I will tell females, males, anyone to keep your crown on no matter what.
